Dr. Bettie C. Borton is originally from Texas and received a B.S.
degree with CED certification in Education of the Deaf from the University of Texas.
Her M.C.D. degree in Audiology was awarded from L.S.U. Medical Center in New Orleans,
La. (1976), and her doctoral degree in Audiology was completed from the University of
Florida at Gainesville (2000). Bettie has served hearing impaired and multi-handicapped
children and their families in various educational settings, including Bright Preschool
for Hearing Impaired Children in New Orleans, La., the Tennessee Infant Parent Service
(TIPS), and as director of the Early Intervention Program for the State of Alabama. She
was engaged in the private practice of Audiology in Jasper, Alabama, for 10 years. After
5 years as a clinical audiologist at The Kirklin Clinic, she returned to private practice
as the co-owner/director of Doctors Hearing Centers in Birmingham. Bettie is currently the
owner/director of Borton Audiology Consultants, and also serves as a Clinical Professor in
the doctoral Audiology program at Auburn University Montgomery Speech and Hearing Clinic and
Auburn University. A lifelong horse enthusiast with a background in Saddleseat Equitation,
she is the Executive Director of Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrians (MANE).
Starla Raiborn serves as MANE’s Program Director, joining the MANE staff in
January 2003. She has a BS degree in Psychology from Troy University, with a minor in Early
Childhood Education and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Counseling. She has over
twenty years personal and professional equestrian experience and holds certification through NARHA
as an Advanced Level Therapeutic Riding Instructor. She is a Certified Special Olympics Equestrian
Coach and has Level 1 certification through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association.
She is also currently the NARHA Alabama State Representative and the Region V Representative for
the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association.
Kimberly Wallis began working as a MANE volunteer in 2004 and became a staff
instructor in 2005. Kim has been a volunteer swimming and riding instructor for the Girl Scout’s
SMILE camp since 1998. She received an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology, a Bachelor’s
degree in Wildlife Management from Auburn University, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree.
She has been riding horses for sixteen years and is a member of the USEF.
