Sensory Integration Trail

The MANE “Field of Dreams” sensory integration project is a unique and innovative program for sensory integration training. The trail spans more than 3 acres and is accessible by foot, horseback, and carriage. A modified figure eight shaped road was implemented for flexibility and interest, 8 activity stations are strategically placed along the path, and a small covered arena provides much needed shade and rest. Each station features activities designed to promote and enhance sensory learning while participants are engaged in therapeutic riding or carriage driving, and family members are able to learn about sensory training concepts as they accompany their riders on foot. Activities along the path are designed to integrate and enrich the senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch, and presents learning opportunities in new and exciting ways.

What is Sensory Integration?

The human senses work together to form a composite picture of who we are physically, where we are, and what is going on around us. Sensory integration is the critical function of the brain that is responsible for producing this composite picture. It is the organization of sensory information for ongoing use. For most children, sensory integration develops in the course of ordinary childhood activities. When sensory integration does not develop as efficiently as it should, problems in learning, development, and behavior may become evident. Its far-reaching effects can interfere with academic learning, social skills, and even self-esteem.

Virtually every client participating in the MANE program has some degree of sensory integration dysfunction. MANE clients using the “Field of Dreams” sensory integration trail will be guided through activities that challenge his or her ability to respond appropriately to sensory input by making a successful, organized response while mounted.
